Aegis History

When we formed our company back in 1992, we faced the competition armed with a business plan, four employees and more importantly, a vision on how we could help organizations help themselves. One task left undecided was what we should call this new venture. We wanted a name that would clearly define our services and our philosophy. During our search many ideas surfaced, but none could compare to the name finally chosen-Aegis.

In Greek mythology, the Aegis was the shield of Zeus, which offered him complete protection while displaying his power over many adversaries. According to myth, the Aegis provided the perception of absolute protection that allowed Zeus to avoid conflict with many of his enemies. This myth truly embodies the modern-day definition of Aegis, which means "under the authority of or the protection of."

Ten years after our formation, this symbol and its modern-day definition continue to remind us of our mission not only to protect our clients, but also to use the risk management and training techniques we have to help avoid conflict as well.

Since our beginning, education has been our approach to business. We are not a traditional insurance risk management and brokerage firm. Our unique approach emphasizes the importance of extensive risk management services and aggressive claims and litigation management, which has always separated Aegis from others in the industry.

Whatever the situation, whether training a county snowplow operator for high-risk situations, conducting training sessions on avoiding sexual harassment for department heads or providing on-site loss control evaluation services, we constantly strive to be proactive instead of reactive when working to avoid or control losses.

Working in concert with municipalities over the past decade, this philosophy has proven to be an effective shield that has protected the taxpayers time and time again. This philosophy does not work in practice, however, without the commitment and fortitude of our clients. The close working relationship that has been established between associations, elected individuals, their employees and the staff of Aegis over the years has provided the continuity that is so important to making success a reality.

As the services we provide continue to expand, so too has our office staff. What was once an office of four individuals providing basic administration and marketing in 1992 has grown to over 40 employees. Keeping our clients at the forefront of innovation and creativity is key to protecting their assets and ensuring the success of their programs. In order to meet this challenge, we have expanded service in claims and litigation management, data base management, loss control services, statutory accounting and actuarial preparation.
